  Our classes for 10 - 12 year olds are designed to enable students to focus on a specific subject matter while exploring different mediums. We will teach students basic techniques for each material. Students will use newly acquired skills to express their own artistic ideas.  




Winter/Spring 2019Art Classes for 10 - 12 year olds


Wheel Throwing- Are you ready to get your hands dirty? Patience and a high tolerance for messy hands is a must for learning this fun way to create pottery. Students will learn the basic steps for creating bowls and cups on the pottery wheel. Wednesdays, 1/9-2/13, 6:00-7:30 PM, $145

Illustrating Stories (4th– 8thgrade) –Students will use basic drawing techniques to learn how to tell a story through pictures. While focusing on composition and design, students will explore how to communicate an idea through an illustration. Students will work with stories written by other students as part of the Grannie Annie project. At the end of the course, students will have the opportunity to enter their illustration to be considered for publication in the Grannie Annie Family Stories Celebration, Volume 13. Tuesdays, 2/19-4/2, 6:00-7:30 PM, $140

The Art of Chess - Offered in conjunction with the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of St. Louis, students will learn the game of chess while designing and creating their own chess set.  One hour, chess lessons  and games will be led by a chess instructor from the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of St. Louis. During the remaining time, students will create clay chess pieces and a wooden board.  All levels welcome.Thursdays, 2/21 - 4/4, 6:00 - 8:00 PM $185 (no classes the week of 3/18-3/22) 

Painted Portraits – Learn basic facial proportions to create realistic portraits using both dry media and acrylic paint. Thursdays, 4/11-5/16, 6:00-7:30 PM, $145

Todd Tevlin Comic Workshops:

Beginner Kids Comic Workshop (8-11 years old) ~ Does your child like to draw and tell stories or do you simply need a break? If so, then this class is for you! This TWO WEEK class is taught by comic artist, Todd Tevlin, who will teach the basics of cartooning and comic strips to 8-11 year olds, including character design, speech bubbles, panel layout, writing stories, and drawing a single and three panel comic of their very own. What is taught can easily transition into full comic book creation! Mondays, 1/7 – 1/14, 7:00 – 8:00 PM, $40

Character Design  (8-11 years old)  ~ This TWO WEEK class taught by comic artist, Todd Tevlin, focuses on just drawing characters. Whether they are cartoony or realistic is up to the child as the same techniques apply to both! A lot of drawing principles will be taught, including facial expressions and proportions, exaggerating expressions and body language, the 'how many heads high' scale, height/weight variations, different views (3/4, front, side, etc), working with color palettes, silhouette comparisons, K.I.S.S. drawings, and how to make characters unique from one another. Tuesdays, 1/8 – 1/15, 6:00 – 7:00 PM, $40

One-Day Workshop for 6th-12th Grades

Wheel Throwing - Always wanted to try your hand at the potter's wheel? Learn how to create small bowls during this one-day session! Saturday, 2/23, 12:00-1:30 PM, $30

Mom and Me Fused Glass Dish ~  Spend some time together this Mother’s Day weekend getting creative! Create a unique dish using layers of class. Participants will learn glass cutting and design techniques to create a colorful dish. Saturday, May 11, 10:00 - 11:30 AM, $40
